WINGATE, N.C. — A tractor-trailer was struck by a train after getting stuck on the tracks on Thursday.

The crash happened at the railroad crossing on N Main Street in Wingate around 5 p.m. on Thursday, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office.

No injuries were reported from the crash. Officials say no hazardous material was being carried by the tractor-trailer.

This is the third train crash reported in Wingate this year.

In January, two trucks were struck after getting stuck on the tracks. No injuries happened in either of those crashes.

The Wingate Board of Commissioners held a special meeting in March to discuss potential improvements to the railroad crossings in town.

Officials explained in the meeting that the elevated crossings caused the trucks to get stuck on the tracks, leaving them stranded as trains approached.

A plan was created to flatten and smooth out the crossings so no trucks will get stuck on them. The plan could also add more lighting and sidewalks to connecting roads.
